Fuck. Where do I start…? EDITED: DIAGNOSIS!

So.

Right around Christmas I noticed some pain in my right knee. It was weird and random. Sharp and annoying.

Then it went away.

Between Christmas and New Year a bruise appeared. I probably hit it on something.

I go to my usual New Year’s Day race  shuffle and try and warm up. I realize very quickly that things are not good. The roads are slick and the pain is just….well, pain. I consult with a friend who tells me I can DNF and he’ll drive me back after 3 miles. For better or worse I finish and am crippled for the rest of the day.

I wait till the bruise goes away.

I run again…no pain! Til the next day. The outside of my right knee is tender yet again around the ligament. I putz around and then I do the next winter race because  I’m an idiot  it was in the 40s!

No pain while running, but afterward? A friend with medical training notices my knee cap isn’t in the right place. Another friend observes that something was off with my form, which is pretty knock kneed to begin with. He points out something looked weird with my hips.

Mother of vodka, here is the evidence:

Oof.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???

If you look closely, you can see that my left hip is pointing in a different direction than the right – and not in a normal way. Look how how badly I’m heel striking. If you take that “crooked hip” thing into consideration…is it a surprise that everything is fucked up?

LMT friend checked me out later in the day. She pointed out that in addition to my right knee being out of place, my left hip is a full inch above my right and she suspects its not usually the case based on how out of wack everything is.

So.

Do I call this an injury? Or is it just years of bad form catching up with me at a shitty time?

I have an ART appointment this afternoon. Guess we’ll find out whether I can actually attempt to run something faster than a 3:18 this spring.

Either way, you’ll find me at the bar later.

Diagnosis: I’m messed up.

Okay, fine – that’s not exactly it.

But the gist is my hips are not in the right place and need to be put back, among other things. And its probably been this way for years as I’ve always been able to extend the left hip easily and the right? Just doesn’t…extend. (Think of a leg circle like you do in pilates: I can make a full circle with my left leg, but have to  bend my leg to do it on my right. ) Apparently my right hip flexor is more or less shot…but it can be fixed.

Exciting stuff, huh?

Meanwhile, you’ll still find me at the  bar.

Can i diagnose you? k thanks. Looks/seems to be similar to what I have going on. Mega tight hip flexor, predominantly in one side (but probably in both) which causes the hips to not sit level, and actually tilt forward, along with your pelvis. AND this causes mega heel striking, because it’s pretty impossible to run with normal form when your pelvis and hips are sitting all wonky, and it makes your knees hurt like a bitch. let me know if I’m right!!!

This is on point with what I’ve heard so far. Your point about the forward tilt is interesting as I’ve discovered I’m not physically capable of squatting properly without propping myself against a wall. I get pulled forward and it alllll comes from my back, meaning my butt sticks out all crooked.

      I AM SEXY

DING DING DING – you were pretty right on! All a pelvis/hip problem. I owe you a beer!

I was just told this week at PT that my hips aren’t in alignment either. Pain in right hip flexor and knee. It’s super fun.

It sounds like IT band syndrome. The fact that your hip is low probably just means you have weak hip abductors (which I have as well). This can certainly cause knee problems cause it causes if a lot of hip instability. Does the pain come on suddenly and sharply, out of know where? Is it lateral, usually a little above the knee? That’s more typical of IT band syndrome. Google “noble test for IT band”, and it will show you one way to try to diagnose IT band (I work in the medical field). About the bruising? Not sure. Probably just coincidentally bruised it unless you remember twisting your knee or something.

    • January 18, 2013 6:01 pm

Yep! Weak abductor, weak core….probably all contributed to the lack of alignment.
Interestingly, my right IT band isn’t TOO unusually tight. It’s the left one that’s pretty nasty.

    Fuck. I’m sorry.

I hope you’re at the bar in celebration and note to drink away running-related sorrows…

Sorry it’s been so shitty. Meh.

Coffee at the moment, this will change later.
We can virtually drink together, yes?

I’m not sure what I just read because I’ve probably already drank too much tonight, because this week SUCKED some mighty nasty ass. But, in your honor, or support thereof, I shall have one more for you. And hope all shit is better soon. This includes your damn knee.

Yes, good that it can be fixed. Bit hard to tell from a still photo what your hips are doing. Similarly for the foot-strike — looks fairly heavy on the heel, but a heel-strike in itself isn’t bad form. I’ve come to that conclusion after seeing high speed video of a Kenyan 2:06 marathoner heel striking.

Anyway, hope it doesn’t take too many treatments. Are you running Boston?

    • January 21, 2013 7:20 pm

Yeah, its not a gimmie – but the extent to which everything is out of place right now (Official diagnosis is Pelvic subluxation, no surprise there!) is gonna require a couple weeks of aggressive treatment.

In theory I’m running Boston. Will be a couple weeks before I can handle any sort of training load again which means its not looking like I’m likely to improve on my PR anytime soon…

I have that same problem with my hips, they slide out of place. I asked my doctor why it happens and she said “Because you’re a woman”. Of course, blame the vagina.
I found a good chiropractor that I try to see every 6 weeks and it really helps.
If all else fails, grow a penis.

Hard for me to tell what your hips are doing in that photo with all those clothes on. POST NEKID VIDEO? XO

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear about this. :/ I hope this gets better soon. How do you go about fixing it?

  11. January 21, 2013 11:38 pm

Glad to hear this aspect of your f-ed up-ness can be fixed. In the meantime, please post more gratuitous shots of your bare legs. KTHNX.

Glad you got it figured out. In the meantime — core workouts!!! And drinking.
